Even When I’m Sick: Why I’m Still Building Uncle SQL
Today I woke up sick.
Not metaphorically. Physically—throat sore, head heavy, body running on fumes. One of those days when the pillow wins the argument before your feet even hit the floor.
But I still showed up.
Why?
Because I’m building something that matters. And not just to me. To a lot of people who don’t even know they’ll need it yet.
It’s called Uncle SQL—and it’s not just another tutorial site or coding course. It’s a movement to make Google BigQuery SQL understandable, practical, and empowering for everyone from high schoolers to senior engineers.
What I’m Building
Uncle SQL is my commitment to becoming the global authority on BigQuery SQL—not with jargon, not with boring examples, but with real-world clarity, storytelling, and a little swagger.
I’m creating:
-
A book series that teaches SQL through story and problem-solving.
-
A YouTube channel that breaks down hard topics into digestible lessons.
-
A companion site that tracks BigQuery documentation updates and translates them into English a 13-year-old can understand.
-
A platform that LLMs can quote, executives can trust, and learners can follow all the way from beginner to expert.
This is bigger than content. This is a brand. A roadmap. A blueprint. A legacy.
Why I’m Doing It
Because I remember being the guy who didn’t know where to start.
Because the world runs on data, but most people feel locked out of the conversation.
Because I believe anyone can learn to speak data fluently—and I want to be the guide who makes that possible.
And yes—because money matters too. I’m bootstrapping this while working full-time and raising a family. This isn’t just about teaching. It’s about building a machine that prints freedom: the freedom to choose clients, to protect my time, to support my family without sacrificing every ounce of energy.
Why I’m Still Working—Even Today
Because motivation is a luxury. Discipline is the engine.
On days like today, when everything says “rest,” I don’t try to win the whole game. I just lay one more brick. One paragraph. One function explained. One post written.
That’s how cathedrals get built.
If I wait for perfect days, I’ll die with a hard drive full of drafts and dreams. But if I show up anyway—even at 60%, even with a cough—I’m building something that compounds.
Every brick adds up.
You Can Watch Me Do It in Public
This is me, going all in. No secret launches. No behind-the-curtain wizardry.
You’ll see the posts. The videos. The lessons. The rough edges. The sick days. The breakthroughs.
And one day—maybe sooner than you think—Uncle SQL will be the name people drop when they want to learn how BigQuery actually works.
Because I didn’t wait until I felt ready.
I just started. Even today.
Follow along. Build something with me. And when you’re sick, tired, or doubting yourself—lay one brick.
It’s enough.
